Quick Summary:

Choosing the right AI agent framework helps businesses build scalable, secure, and reliable AI solutions. This guide compares popular frameworks, explains key selection criteria, and explores multi-agent development, business use cases, and common mistakes. With the right AI development company, businesses can select suitable frameworks, streamline workflows, and build AI agent solutions aligned with their goals.

Introduction

Last year we had a client come to us with an agent that worked great in the demo. It read support emails, pulled out order details and wrote tidy replies. Then they tried to add a manager approval step for refunds. That one change took 6 weeks because the framework they had chosen was not built for that kind of control.

This is a story we hear all the time. The concept is good. The model is ok. The underlying framework is just not built for how the business actually works.

So before you pick one just because it’s trending on GitHub or a developer friend swears by it, it’s worth taking a week or two to slow down. In this guide we cover what we think about when we help businesses make this call.

What Is an AI Agent Framework?

An AI agent is software that can take a goal, figure out the steps and use tools to achieve it. Let’s say you want something that checks new leads, looks them up, scores them and drops the good ones into your CRM. That’s an officer.

The framework is what developers build on. It saves them from writing the plumbing every time, like so:

  • icon how the agent selects the next action
  • icon how it connects to your apps and databases
  • icon what it recalls from one step to the next
  • icon How many agents pass work between each other
  • icon logs that show what it did and why

Pick a good one and your team is spending its time on your business logic. Pick a bad match, and they spend it fighting the tool.

Why Is Choosing a Framework Important?

For businesses investing in AI development services, selecting the right framework early can reduce development costs, simplify integrations, and make AI solutions easier to maintain as business requirements grow.

Because a lot of these projects don’t work, honestly. By the end of 2027, Gartner predicts that more than 40% of agentic AI projects will be abandoned due to increasing costs and unclear business value. Not all of those fails are the fault of the framework, but the early tooling choices are a big part of runaway costs and messy rebuilds.

The flip side of that is it’s not going away. Gartner also forecasts that 33% of enterprise software applications will incorporate agentic AI by 2028, rising from less than 1% in 2024. Your competition will be building agents. Those who carefully chose their foundation will move faster later.

Selection Criteria

When evaluating an AI agent development company or planning an in-house project, businesses should prioritize flexibility, integration capabilities, security, and monitoring. These factors help ensure that AI agents support real business processes rather than simply performing well in demos.

When we sit down with a client, the first questions we ask are:

  • icon And what is the real job? One agent doing one task is very different than five agents passing work around.
  • icon How much control do you want? If money, medical data or promises to customers are involved, you want fixed steps and approval points.
  • icon What does it have to talk to? Your ERP. Your CRM. Your inbox. Your calendar. Make sure there are connectors before you fall in love.
  • icon Are you locked into one AI model? Prices and quality change every few months. You want to have the option to switch.
  • icon You see what happened? If an agent has given a customer a wrong answer, you need to find out precisely why.
  • icon Does your team speak the language? A good Python framework is not a good fit for a .NET shop.
  • icon What’s the cost at full volume? Agents ask the model a lot of times per task. Little costs add up fast.

If we had to choose just one, it would be visibility. An agent you can’t debug is an agent you can’t trust in front of customers.

Why MCP Is Hot in AI (2026)

There are dozens of them out there. Here’s our frank evaluation of those clients who ask us about it most frequently.

FrameworkBest ForNotes
LangGraphWorkflows with branches, loops, and approval stepsTakes longer to learn but offers greater control
CrewAIRapid multi-agent development with defined rolesGood for prototypes, but complex edge cases may need extra handling.
Microsoft Agent Tools (Semantic Kernel, AutoGen)Businesses invested in Azure and .NET.Well suited to Microsoft-based environments
OpenAI Agents SDKBuilding agents with OpenAI modelsLightweight and straightforward, with greater reliance on OpenAI
Google ADKTeams using Google Cloud and GeminiA natural fit for Google’s AI ecosystem
Claude Agent SDKCoding, research, and tool-intensive agentsBuilt around Anthropic’s Claude models
LlamaIndexAgents that search and work with business documentsStrong focus on data retrieval and knowledge workflows

One caveat to this table: it will age fast. Microsoft has been the only one working on the harmonisation of the core components between AutoGen and Semantic Kernel so what you read in an old tutorial may not match today’s version. Always check the latest docs.

The Model Context Protocol Question

If there is one technical detail to care about, it is the support of the model context protocol, or MCP, by a framework.

In plain english, MCP is a common standard for connecting AI to your tools and data. You write a connector once, and a lot of different agents can use it. It’s sort of like USB for AI.

It is no longer owned by any one company, so we can recommend it without reservation. Anthropic donated MCP to the Agentic AI Foundation, a directed fund under the Linux Foundation co-founded by Anthropic, Block and OpenAI, with support from Google, Microsoft, AWS, Cloudflare and Bloomberg. And it’s being used a tonne. MCP saw over 97 million monthly SDK downloads in March 2026, according to reports.

If you want a framework that doesn’t support MCP for now, ask when it will. Otherwise you might be rebuilding integrations a year from now.

Frameworks by Business Use Case

Not rules, but rough starting guidelines:

  • icon The customer support triage: LangGraph for approval steps if you want. OpenAI Agents SDK for something simple
  • icon Internal knowledge search: LlamaIndex
  • icon Sales research and lead enrichment: Good work with CrewAI
  • icon Automation of AI processes for back-office, approvals and invoices: Microsoft’s tools or LangGraph
  • icon Developer and code helpers: Claude Agent SDK

Take a clinic receptionist agent. It has to verify who’s calling, check the doctor’s calendar, reserve the slot and hand it over to a human when it’s uncertain. You don’t want a creative, free-wheeling agent in there. You want tight, predictable steps, and that should guide your choice of framework.

Managed and Open Source Frameworks

Open source tools such as LangGraph, CrewAI and LlamaIndex are free, flexible and can run on your own servers, which is important if your data is sensitive. The catch is that your team is responsible for hosting, scaling and security.

Big cloud providers offer managed platforms that get you up and running faster and take care of a lot of the boring infrastructure. You pay for that with creeping usage pricing and a tougher exit should you ever want to leave.

Most of our clients are in the middle somewhere. They are built on an open-source framework and hosted on managed cloud infrastructure. They keep their logic portable and don’t have to babysit servers.

How to Judge a Framework

Don’t judge a demo video. Instead, we would recommend the following:

  • icon Choose one workflow that is really important to the business.
  • icon Create the same small pilot in two or three frameworks.
  • icon Use real data, with typos, and half-filled forms. Problems are hidden by clean sample data.
  • icon Monitor the success rate, cost per task, speed and how often a person had to intervene.
  • icon Attempt to break it. Make fuzzy requests, turn an API off, and see what it does.
  • icon Check the logs. If your team doesn’t know what happened, that is your answer.
  • icon Multiply the pilot cost by your expected volume per month.

This is cheap compared to a six-month rebuild. Two to four weeks of this.

Common Mistakes in Selection

  • icon Going with what is popular. “Stars on GitHub don’t tell you what it does in production.”
  • icon Going straight to multi-agent setups. A good agent is worth three confused agents.
  • icon Forget the logs. You will need them the first time something goes wrong.
  • icon No human checkpoints. Anything that sends out emails, refunds money, or sets up appointments needs to have a review step in place at first.
  • icon Go all in on a single model. Be flexible.
  • icon Trusting all the “agent” tags. Gartner has called out “agent washing” and estimates that only about 130 of the thousands of agentic AI vendors actually are.

Checklist for AI Framework

You should be able to say yes to most of these before you commit:

  • icon We know the goal of the business and how we will measure it
  • icon We can tell if we need one agent or many.
  • icon It supports MCP or has a clear plan to
  • icon It works with several model providers
  • icon We can track every step the agent takes
  • icon Where it matters, we can add human approval
  • icon It meets our security and privacy requirements
  • icon We can actually work in it with our team
  • icon It has an active community or vendor behind it
  • icon We tried it on real data
  • icon We know roughly what it costs on a full scale

Conclusion

There is no perfect framework. There’s the one that works for your use case, your systems and your team. And the only way to find out for sure is to test a couple on a real problem.
Start small, keep a human in the loop when the stakes are high, and favour open standards like MCP so you don’t get locked in later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the best AI agent framework for a small business?

A. Depends on the job. For simple tasks, a lightweight SDK is generally enough. If approvals and branching paths exist, LangGraph is worth the learning curve.

Q. Is there a need for multiple agents?

A. Likely not on day one. Begin with one. If the work lends itself to natural roles, such as research, drafting and review, then split it up across multiple agents.

Q. How long does it take to create an agent?

A. A focused pilot is typically two to six weeks long. Something production-ready, with integrations and monitoring, is more like two to four months.

Q. Is open source safe for enterprise use?

A. Yes, if it’s done right. It’s far more important for hosting, access control and monitoring than whether the code is public or not.

Q. Do we build in-house or do we partner with an AI development company?

A. If no one on your team has shipped an agent before, it will usually save time and money to get outside help for the first build. Then many companies make maintenance in-house.

Q. What does an AI agent actually cost to run?

A. It depends a lot on how often the agent calls the model per task. A simple agent that answers one question might cost very little. One that researches, drafts and checks its own work can cost several times more. Run a small pilot first and track cost per task, then multiply it by your monthly volume. That number is far more useful than any vendor’s pricing page.

Q. Can we switch frameworks later if the first one doesn’t work out?

A. Yes, but it’s rarely painless. The business logic can usually be moved, but the way each framework handles memory, tools and orchestration is different, so expect some rework. Building your connectors on the model context protocol helps here, because those integrations can travel with you to the next framework.

Q. Will an AI agent replace our staff?

A. In most cases, no. What we see is that agents take over the repetitive parts, like sorting tickets, pulling data or drafting first replies, and people spend more time on the work that needs judgement. For anything involving money, health or customer promises, we always recommend keeping a human in the loop, at least in the beginning.
